Report summary:
Through a series of in-person and online events, Forum 2029 has opened a space for politicians, organisers, policy experts and campaigners to come together and define a progressive policy platform fit for the UK in 2025 and beyond.
This report takes some first steps to building new consensus around a defined direction of travel for progressive policy in the UK, drawing on the discussions that emerged during this initial series of events, to outline a set of actionable, evidence-based policy proposals across five key domains: Housing; Food, Water & Energy; Public Services; Media, Tech & Democractic Reform; and Tax, Work & Incomes.
The report sets out seven elements of a living standards programme fit for purpose:
• Housing as a public good
• Food, water and energy secured for all households
• Public ownership of the basic services of everyday life
• A fair tax system to rebalance the economy
• Fair labour market regulations to make work sustainable
• Welfare system change in order to move towards a practical income floor
• Media and democratic reform to enhance the public’s voice in these matters
